New Delhi Tourist Attractions

The Red Fort, Qutb Minar, India Gate, Humayun’s Tomb, Lotus Temple and Akshardham Temple are the key tourist places in Delhi. New Delhi is commonly known as Delhi which is also a Union Territory. It is a joint responsibility of the Central Government and the local government. Along with the neighbouring Cities, a special development zone in and around Delhi is known as National Capital Region (NCR).
 
The City is spread over 1484 sq. km of area. This City is probably in existence in some or other form since 6th Century B.C. Raj Ghat is a memorial of Mahatma Gandhi.

Red Fort - New Delhi

Red Fort and Qutb-Minar

Red Fort in Delhi is at the center of Delhi and this was the residence of Mughal emperor for almost 200 years until 1857. This is a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2007. The fort is huge and is made of big size red sandstones. You can keep wondering about the construction. The fort is now hosting multiple museums.

Qutb Minar - New Delhi

Qutb-Minar is the highest tower in India in red and buff sandstone. It has a diameter of 14.32 m at the base and about 2.75 m on the top. The Minar’s height is 72.5 m. Qutbu’d-Din Aibak laid the foundation of this Minar in AD 1199. The Minar has numerous inscriptions on it in Arabic and Nagari characters.

The India Gate is a memorial to 82,000 soldiers of the Indian Army in the First World War. Though it is a war memorial, it is also a great piece of architecture. In 1971, after Bangladesh Liberation war, a small simple structure ‘Amar Jawan Jyoti’ was constructed below the Archway.

Humayun’s Tomb built in 1565 A.D. after the death of the Mughal Ruler Humayun. Inside the enclosure of this Tomb, you will see a lush green garden and freely roaming deer.

Lotus Temple at Delhi

Lotus Temple or Bahai Temple: The Lotus Flower shape temple is the 7th major Bahai Temple around the World. This is made up of White Marble and is an architectural marvel. The environment inside the temple auditorium gives you a unique experience. It is really a calm and peaceful place in the heart of a busy City like Delhi and you will learn new things about the Bahai religion.
One more place to combine with this tour is the visit to Kingdom of DreamsAkshardham Temple is a huge new Temple similar to its namesake in the state of Gujarat. It shows the history of 10,000 years of Indian culture through art and sculptures. The temple construction took 5 years and it is worth visiting this beautiful temple. It is better to reach here early in the morning as there is a queue outside the temple for entrance.
There is a wide choice of Hotels and Restaurants in Delhi. You can explore the City for many days depending on your availability. The weather in Delhi is very hot in summer and very cold in winter. The months between October and March are generally the best time to visit Delhi. Connaught Place, Chandni Chowk, Karol Bagh, Paharganj and Khan Market are the retail markets in Delhi. If you love street shopping, you may visit at least a few of them.

Beyond Delhi

Delhi is a starting point for many tours in North India and you can start the famous tour of Delhi-Agra-Jaipur (also known as Golden Triangle) from here. For going to Himachal Pradesh, most of the tourists will first reach New Delhi. Know more about Agra & know about the Pink City of Jaipur also.
More tourist places to explore around Delhi:
Chandigarh, Shimla, Manali, Dharamkot, Dharamshala, McLeodganj, Kasauli Bir-Billing and Mukteshwar. The pilgrim places of Haridwar, Rishikesh and Mathura are also near Delhi. The wildlife lovers can visit Bharatpur and Corbett from Delhi. There are Taxi services available from Delhi to most of these tourist places which are up to 300 km from Delhi. They are famous as weekend gateways from Delhi. If you are going to be in Delhi for a week or more, visiting the weekend gateways is a nice idea, as they are beautiful places near this large crowded place.
